International United

IU Mission and Goal
.

International United is a Class 3 Developmental soccer team in San Francisco. We will be playing in the competitive Upper House Division of the U11 Boys Viking, PAL, and futsal leagues, starting in the 2009 fall season. We bring the proud traditions, and the strongest players, of the current International United team. We are soliciting other interested individuals and would welcome committed players to join and contribute to this team

IU Team Mission: To develop players to their potential with planned trainings, personal objectives, and regular assessments. We emphasize fitness, personal skills, teamwork, tactical understanding of the game, and sportsmanship. It is our intention that being a member of this team will be character building in the most positive sense.

IU Team Goal: To have fun while developing skills in order that players could be successful members of their high school soccer team, and move on to their college team.
You want to be a Zidane, Ronaldinho, Donovan, Beckham, Kaka, or Messi. If you like this sport already, you’re going to love being a member of this team. You will get in shape. You will learn a lot. It will be fun. It will be exciting.
Welcome aboard!

A few words

Greetings Soccer Parents,

We are delighted to welcome you to our new team, International United! Your son scored well at the tryouts, and has earned a spot on our 2008-9 roster.

It's exciting to be starting in this new era of competitive soccer in San Francisco, and it's great to have your son and family's being aboard! Although this will be a Class 3 Developmental Division, several levels below the most competitive soccer leagues, we expect the play to be at a high level, and the challenge to be formidable. There are already seven U10 teams committed to playing Upper House this fall. Due to roster limitations, we had to turn down many strong players, and we'll keep an eye on them and others for future roster expansion. It is already a large compliment to your son that, from a large pool of talented players, he was chosen for this team.

Congratulations! Now the work, and the fun, begins.

We decided to keep the roster lean and mean, at the minimum 12 currently, so that playing time is maximized for more players. We do not want players sitting on the sidelines. Next year in U10 we expect to play on larger pitches, but there are still only 8 players on the field (7+GK) at a time. You have read the team philosophy at the website that coach Patrice Taffin is hosting: www.patricetaffin.com/soccer

From that preamble emerges expectations for players and parents that we want to outline briefly at this date:

1. We expect a commitment to play with the team in both the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 seasons. Viking has said that there will be ten games in the fall, and we expect PAL to have 8-10 games in the spring. We will also field a futsal team (or two) in the winter of 2009, but this is not mandatory. We expect that, in general, in a conflict with another sport, IU games will take priority.

We have big plans for this team. We are anticipating that International United will continue to develop for at least several years, ideally through the end of middle school. (We have that much training in the works!) Especially for students at FAIS and CAIS, we hope that this team may evolve into a middle school team that could play in a Bay Area Middle School Athletic league. As we stated, our goal is that players who stick with us should be in a strong position to qualify for their high school teams.

2. We expect genuine participation at practices, usually two hours twice a week, from late August to November, (sometimes playoffs have run into December,) and resuming March, through early June. Please talk to the coaches about any problems with this right away. We will hold one practice on Fridays after school. The other practice will be earlier in the week. Which day will depend on availability of a trainer, but do let us know of overwhelming school's need to avoid certain days. We understand that there will be school breaks, and whenever possible, we will request byes during these times, but these requests are not always honored. Since we have a minimum roster, all anticipated absences must be requested well in advance, please. Illnesses are, of course, considered excused absences, but it has been my experience in a decade of coaching that the strongest players rarely miss a practice or game.

3. Players will earn playing time in the games by dint of demonstrated hard work during practices and performance in games. Players have been chosen on the basis of a number of factors, including aggressiveness, quickness to the ball, speed, skills, coachability, team play, and coaches' recommendations. We have made a commitment to work with our chosen players, and to foster their development. We encourage and expect players to continue to expend a genuine effort at all times. We have players waiting in the wings, and will continue to have rolling tryouts, and to recruit exceptional players for future considerations.

4. Parents should be aware that costs for running our team will be considerably higher than past seasons. We are fortunate to have Patrice Taffin as our head coach, and we want to reward him suitably for his time and expertise. We are planning to find a trainer for one practice a week, and may hold periodic specialized clinics run by defensive and goalkeeping experts. Anticipate that each season will incur costs of $200 - $350 per player. We feel that, in comparison to the cost per hour of such activities as music lessons, gymnastic lessons, martial arts lessons, swimming lessons, tennis or golf lessons, this is a relative bargain. For anyone for whom this may be hardship, please let us know ASAP.

5. Parental participation is encouraged at all levels. For the FAIS and CAIS students, carpools can be arranged. Yes, even these dedicated young soccer players still enjoy snacks. I think that Vikings is arranging for three referees each game, but if not, we'll need volunteer assistant referees. I encourage all parents to take the VAR training, and to take the F coach's license course. (Details at the Vikings website.) It will enhance your enjoyment of the game. Parental field participation is encouraged, and it's also great fun to get out on the field, and to realize in person how tough this game is. And yes, we do plan to hold a parents v. players scrimmage! (As long as Patrice is playing on our side, we have a chance!) There are upcoming opportunities for developing a team uniform, nickname (the kids think our "temporary" name sounds like an airline, or a corporation!) team cheer, logo, snacks schedule, social activities, and so on. We do plan to hold a team social get-together before the start of the fall season. Please let us know of any parent or guardian not on the email list, who should be included. Those of you who have regular baby sitters, nannies, or child care workers, please send along their contact information. Finally, please also let us know about any significant medical information, including anything that might not have been included on the CYSA registration form.

6. We may plan to have some summer soccer trainings during June, July, and August for those who are in town. Summer soccer camps are a good idea, and we have some experience with many of them locally. Consider SoccerInsight, run by DeeJae Johnson, coach at University HS, in the Presidio, Aug. 18-22. Many of the Firedragons team attended last year, and enjoyed it. We may be able to get in some team coaching, also, like we did last year. Vikings Soccer Club also runs a camp for 4 consecutive weeks, usually at West Sunset, in July and August, and it's been improved under Toby Rappolt, the U10 travel team coach.

7. Depending on time, availability, and team development, we may consider entering a tournament or so during the year. Vikings Soccer has plans for a local tournament this fall, perhaps. Tournaments play is a lot of fun, but it often takes up most of a weekend.

Once again, welcome to International United! Please let us know that you accept the above expectations, or not. We are always happy to have your criticism, suggestions, and comments.
